North Central College
Course Planning for the Life Sciences

A Biochemistry degree allows students to specialize in understanding life at the level of cells and molecules. Both the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts programs prepare students for graduate school; employment in a research or biotechnology laboratory; or medical, dental, or veterinary school. The BS requires advanced electives, allowing students to gain more depth in biology and chemistry, while the BA leaves more room to gain breadth with a minor or emphasis outside the sciences. See the College catalog for course descriptions and pre-requisites.

Notes:

1BCHM majors may fulfill their seminar requirement by taking either BIOL 290 (0 credit; students are audience members and evaluators, freshman year recommended), 390 (2 credits; students explore careers, sophomore fall recommended), and 490 (1 credit; students present research) or CHEM 391, 392, and 493 (1 credit each).

2PHYS 161 and 162 may be taken in place of 131 and 132.

3BCHM BS majors choose 12 hours from the following biology and chemistry advanced electives: BIOL 242, 315, 320, 330, 340, 370, or 450, CHEM 311, 312, 313, 315, 340 or 345 (the one not taken for the major), 401, 451, or 455.

4BCHM 400 (cross-listed as BIOL 400) is taught each semester with two different lab sections; be sure to choose the lab section with the molecular, cellular, or biochemical project (the other section will have an ecological or organismal project).
